What is EMDR?

Eye movement de-sensitisation and reprocessing is an evidence based, trauma informed therapeutic intervention for both adults and children, recognised by the WHO (World Health Organisation) and NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

It is designed to relieve the distress associated with traumatic memories by helping the brain to reprocess them effectively.

EMDR is best known for treating PTSD but can help with a range of mental health conditions for people of all ages.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect in an EMDR session?

Initially we will work together to explore past and present issues; how you may have been affected by trauma or distress, and how these are currently impacting on your life.

We will work on ‘stabilisation’ and draw on your personal resources to support you in the present before processing any trauma.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation in the form of eye movements, tactile stimulation or sounds to reprocess previous trauma while remaining in the present.

Will I have to discuss my past experiences in detail?

Past trauma can still be processed without the need for verbal disclosure.

How many sessions will I need?

EMDR often reduces symptoms of distress in shorter times than other therapies. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommends 6-12 sessions for simple trauma.

For more complex trauma you may need more sessions.
